Widest range of PMG packages available for wind power

By adding several new models to its offering, The Switch, a Finnish-based technology company, is the first company to provide a complete portfolio of permanent magnet based generator packages specifically designed for maximized wind power generation. The latest additions include an outer rotor generator, a modern-style 2.5 MW drive train, and a double-fed option.

Vantaa, Finland  July 6, 2009 – The Switch, a provider of megawatt-class permanent magnet generator (PMG) and full-power converter (FPC) packages for wind power and other new energy applications, now offers the most complete range of permanent magnet (PM) packages.

Outer rotor generator – launch of a new platform for easy turbine integration

The introduction of the newest generator model combines the benefits of a PM and direct-drive solution with an outer rotor. These PM machines represent the technology of choice for next-generation wind power generators, as they offer a platform of highly integrated components that are built to last and require very little maintenance.

The simple, straightforward design integrates the main shaft, main bearings, gearbox and mechanical brake into a single generator “combo”. The outer rotor reduces the weight of a direct-drive application. The generator shares a common bearing with the turbine itself, and the turbine’s brake system has been integrated as part of the generator. The gain is realized in simplicity, fewer components – and therefore, higher reliability.

PMGNext-generation wind power generators: 1.65 MW/17 rpm and 2.15 MW/17 rpm

“For newcomers to modern technology in the wind power industry, The Switch outer rotor generator offers an ideal solution, because it’s the fast-track way to make a high-performance turbine,” says Jukka-Pekka Mäkinen, President and CEO of The Switch. “Our new outer rotor PM technology enables the best possible energy yield in varying wind conditions, thereby maximizing annual energy production.”

“As the industry shifts toward PM technology, The Switch is already able to offer second generation products,” Mäkinen continues. “Our large direct-driven machines have been successfully operating since 2005, a relatively long time in modern wind power history.”

The Switch outer rotor prototypes are currently being shipped to Chinese Dongfang Electrical Machinery Co., Ltd. (DFEM), a leading supplier of cutting-edge wind power technology in the Chinese market. The generator’s cast-iron body facilitates high volume production. The first orders of the outer rotor generator will be installed in the mountainous region of Mongolia where they will operate in extreme conditions and at very low temperatures.

2.5 MW redesign – more energy from existing turbine

Another new offering is the redesigned 2.5 MW drive train for conventional turbines. This PMG and FPC package has been planned for manufacturers who aim to upgrade their existing wind turbine offerings without making substantial changes to their proven designs.

“This modern-style 2.5 MW drive train is based on a growing market need to take greater advantage of existing turbine technology, but allowing it to do more with the wind available. In other words, to maximize the amount of power to energy – which fits perfectly with our business mission,” Mäkinen explains.

Double-fed option with modular power packages

As many wind power turbine manufacturers have selected double-fed induction generator (DFIG) technology, originally due to lower costs and preference, The Switch now offers 1.5 MW and 2 MW packages specifically designed for these manufactures to help them tap into higher power ratings. The Switch double-fed option comes with modular power conversion packages and well-matched generators for exceptional flexibility.

“The Switch is now well-known for its pioneering efforts to establish PM solutions as the preferred choice in the industry,” says Reijo Takala, Vice President, Wind Power. “Yet, we’ve realized that turbine manufactures that apply double-fed technology, too, are searching for ways to improve output performance and take greater advantage of conditions with limited wind speed variations. The Switch now can serve these manufacturers with flexible converter and generator solutions and high component reliability. We have been able to bring our know-how in world-class wind solutions to deliver successfully to those who want to stay with the double-fed approach.”
