Electrification is for everyone

Diesel and petroleum-powered vessels have for a long time dominated the technology used for maritime transportation. Today, though, the industry is facing an inflection point. Why is it so, and how to be prepared for it? Find out in this latest marine blog post.

Trends in the shaft generator business

In the early 2010s, our wind business slowed down and forced us to find new applications for our permanent magnet (PM) technology. We gravitated to marine power generation and propulsion.

Vessels of the future

Green. There are two types of green in the world: money and sustainable technology. Both are important. If you don’t have money, it’s a problem. Whereas if you don’t have green technology to help protect our environment, it’s even more of a problem – an existential problem.

PROKON chooses The Switch Drive™ direct-drive generator and full-power converter package

In a move to gain independence in manufacturing wind turbines, Germany-based PROKON selected The Switch as its partner for its key permanent magnet generators and full-power converters. This marks a significant start to cooperation for both companies.

For The Switch, this is the second contract with a German customer for a direct drive PMG in the power range of 3 MW. For PROKON, this opens up new market opportunities and strengthens the company’s single-source wind power park portfolio.

Today, the number of projects involving hybrid solutions or alternate energy sources is exploding. Now, there are plenty of hybrid solutions with proven install bases, and the accessibility and ROI potential of hybrid solutions is starting to get within acceptable parameters. But what will the future bring?

Sun power for marine?

Wherever the sun shines, solar panels are there working in all sorts of capacities. But is there a place for solar power in the marine industry? Read in this latest blog.

The savings, reliability and compactness of PM machines

Low CapEx/OpEx, high reliability and compactness. These are the three most important criteria our clients think of when considering adding electric machines to a new or upgraded vessel. But is it possible? Yes, with increasingly popular permanent magnet technology.

An exciting ride toward making the switch

Being in the driver’s seat of The Switch since its inception in 2006 has been the highlight of my career. As of June 30, with full confidence, I am handing the keys of The Switch over to the next generation.
