Carlo Cecchi: China’s wind power industry is eyeing West

In 2010, China’s speed in wind power development was probably one of the most discussed topics in the global wind power industry. Based in Beijing and looking at the development from this part of the world, I have made a couple of observations about the Chinese market trends in 2011. One thing is clear. While China continues to focus on building its own renewable energy infrastructure and establishing Beijing’s ambitious wind power capacity goals, the Chinese wind power industry has definitely started to gear up and they are eyeing West.

In October 2007, MAN TURBO of Switzerland announced the successful factory testing of its HOFIM™ compact compressor system, a sub-sea gas compression solution that includes highly tailored basic motor technology from The Switch. This motor is part of a future-oriented project financed by the Åsgard Licence Partners in Norway to develop compression systems for the next generation of oil and gas production.

The Switch together with MAN TURBO developed the high-speed motor, based on solid rotor technology, for the compressor system that will be used in a challenging environment of uncleaned wellstream gas.

Large-scale production cooperation takes off in China

In summer 2008, The Switch and its Chinese partner Dongfang Electrical Machinery Co. Ltd (DFEM) entered into a cooperation agreement to combine world-class technology in permanent magnet (PM) generators from The Switch with DFEM’s vast production capabilities. According to the contract signed in December 2009, the enterprise will now take off with 2.2 MW wind power generators manufactured in DFEM’s brand-new factory in China.

DFEM recently inaugurated a new factory in Deyang, in the southwest Sichuan Province in China, where it is able to produce up to 2,000 PM generators per year in the range of 1 MW to 6 MW. With this mass production capacity at hand, The Switch and its partnering company DFEM are ready to supply the fast-growing market for megawatt-class PM machines.

Efficient grid interconnection and power conditioning for CHP systems

Combined heat and power (CHP) systems are very popular in high-rise buildings as well as industrial sites and other facilities where they produce heat and power at a reasonable cost. CHP systems can save as much as 40% energy compared with traditional ways of producing electricity and heat separately.
