The year 2017 is coming to a close. So, let’s now take a moment to reflect on how The Switch has been able to electrify the different businesses and partners that we’ve touched throughout the year.

How to make money from “free” energy

Sunshine is free of charge! That makes it a great fuel for power generation. The value of this free energy and generated power depends on demand and available alternative sources. In other words, it’s a case of simple supply and demand.

The question is how to harvest this energy effectively and generate high quality power to the grid. Solar intensity, cloudiness and available land conditions vary in different locations and parts of the world. Besides that, it comes down to a proper system design and selection of optimal components.

Greater customer value in all we do

The wind power industry has been under pressure during this year as expected. Still, it now looks like the largest markets of China and the US are moving forward. This brings higher hopes for 2014, which should materialize into orders already this year.

At The Switch, we have enhanced our strategy. We are concentrating even more to bring value to our customers. Our employees have analyzed and discussed how they can promote greater customer value in their work.

How do groundbreaking technologies emerge when academia and industry work hand in hand?

In this podcast in Finnish, we sit down with The Switch’s Chief Technology Officer Panu Kurronen and Lassi Aarniovuori, Professor in Electric Transportation at LUT University, to explore the long-standing power of collaboration between LUT University and The Switch. Liquid cooling is an excellent choice for resilient marine power systems

When we talk about building more resilient ships, the conversation usually revolves around fuel flexibility, smart energy management and robust control systems. But another layer of resilience at the very core of onboard power conversion often gets overlooked — effective thermal design. Modern vessels — whether hybrid, fully electric or simply optimized for greater efficiency…

Why PM machines will be the top choice for electric direct-drive propulsion in large ships

Superior efficiency, reliability and compactness are the core competitive advantages of permanent magnet (PM) machines. With our market-leading position and experience in delivering PM shaft generators, we believe these machines have a big role to play in the electrification of the deep-sea fleet. As shipowners look to lower emissions in line with IMO targets, PM…

Meeting tomorrow’s energy requirements with today’s ships

How can we build and retrofit ships to meet the coming emissions regulations and possible future requirements? This is the urgent question facing the marine industry today. As we move to greener fuel solutions, some challenges include the impact of fuel changes on how an engine runs, the availability of truly green options and the…
