How can DC-based power systems move from promising technology to market-ready solutions for the maritime industry? This was the focus of the STEESMAT and ALL-DC-SHIPS workshop at SMM 2026 in Hamburg on September 3.
The workshop brought together shipowners, technology suppliers, class societies, researchers and other maritime stakeholders to discuss what is needed to accelerate the adoption of DC power systems on board vessels.
Asbjørn Halsebakke, Chief Expert Marine Concepts at The Switch, took part in the workshop’s panel discussion, sharing his perspective alongside other industry experts.
“It was very interesting to hear from both shipowners, class, integrators and our competitors that they agreed that solid-state breakers is the future of DC-based power systems, like our DC-Hub. So, what we have been doing since 2008 is the way to go. I almost wanted to shout out: I told you so! ” says Asbjørn.
Both STEESMAT and ALL-DC-SHIPS are EU-funded projects working to advance next-generation DC power systems for ships. As shipping moves toward hybrid, electric and low-emission operation, DC-based architectures make it easier to integrate batteries, fuel cells and other clean energy sources with fewer energy conversions – and fewer losses – than conventional AC systems.
The Switch is one of 11 partners in STEESMAT, contributing to the development of the LVDC hub, which will facilitate the integration of batteries and fuel cells.
The formal program was followed by a networking reception, giving Asbjørn and other participants a chance to continue the conversation. As he put it afterward: “We really got to ‘nerd out’ at the workshop. Loved it.”
